I know what you are thinking… I’m sorry, Gish-what?
For the past two years, the actor who plays everyone’s favourite awkward and social-inept angel, Misha Collins, has organized a global scavenger hunt or the Greatest International Scavenger Hunt the World Has Ever Seen (or, simply, GISHWHES, for short).
Its a crazy seven day scavenger hunt when participants from all over the world try to do and record things based on the list that comes from Misha’s deviously twisted and creative brain. It’s broken a number of Guiness World Records and is apparently a creative, insane, life-changing week.
And I have never done it.
Now, I did know about it. I sat in on Misha’s panel when he attended Calgary Expo earlier this year and he spoke about it. It peaked my interest then, but I quickly forgot because I have the memory of a gnat. But then, he was a guest on the Nerdist podcast (I love Chris Hardwick in ways that are sick and wrong). The podcast episode was recorded in Scotland (the destination that the winning team from last year went) as Chris’ girlfriend, the lovely Chloe Dykstra, was a member of the winning team.
Actually, Chloe is the reason I decided to sign up this year. She talked at length about how much fun she had and the challenges they faced as well. She was just so genuinely excited about the whole thing. It sounded like it could be right up my alley. So about a week ago, I registered, handed over my scheckles and waited.
Each person who participates must be on a 15-person team. There is no way one person could do the entire list. Some folks assemble their team and sign up, or others, like myself, sign up individually and wait to be put onto a global team by GishBot after registration closed.
Yesterday, I was placed on a team – Team Newsies! We are an eclectic collection of folks from all over the world. We have representation from Australia, Canada, England, Finland, Poland (by way of Japan), Scotland and the United States! We have set up a Facebook group, started a spreadsheet, started to get to know one another and are now waiting in anticipation for the week of INSANITY to start.
I really don’t know what to expect. I’m nervous..maybe terrified, but excited. I think it will be awesome. This roller coaster ride starts on August 11th. It may be an all consuming, all powerful monster. It may drive me mad. But I’m sure it will be one helluva trip!
But I do apologize in advance if I have to subject you to the GISHWHES crazy over the next week.
*Who, for the record, is not awkward, socially inept or an angel. Though he does appear to be everyone’s favourite.
